SACA is proud to present our speaker for

February 2020 General Membership Meeting

Cochise County Supervisor, Tom Borer

Date: February 19, 2020

Tom launched his almost 40-year civil service career with the Department of Defense (Navy) working as a pipefitter in 1976. During his 17+ years at the Shipyard, Tom worked his way from Pipefitter to Foreman, General Foreman and Pipeshop Nuclear Director.

During this time, Tom, along with a partner also founded and operated a small General Contracting business.

In 1993 it was announced that Mare Island Naval Shipyard would close as a result of a Base Realignment and Closer (BRAC) action. In order to retain his tenure, Tom began searching for other positions within the Department of Defense. In early 1994, due to Tom’s construction experience he was offered and accepted a position on Fort Huachuca as a Quality Assurance Evaluator for Carpentry and Housing Maintenance.

Tom’s high morals, ethics and tenacity did not go unrecognized amongst Fort Huachuca leadership, resulting in promotions into critical leadership roles within the Garrison including Lead Quality Assurance Evaluator, Chief of Contract Management, Director of Logistics, Executive Officer, Chief of Plans and Operations, Director of Plans, Training, Mobilization, and Security, and finally culminating his long Department of Defense career as the Deputy to the Garrison Commander.

During his professional tenure, Tom served on numerous boards and committees, and a variety of water conservation projects representing Fort Huachuca. Some of those include the Upper San Pedro Partnership, the Huachuca 50, the Cochise Water Project, and the Garrison Liaison to the City of Sierra Vista and Cochise County.

In his personal time, Tom continued his service to the community through volunteering. Tom served as a liaison with the Sierra Vista Riding Club to secure a new location and served as the club’s Vice President, Treasurer, and Facilities Manager. Furthermore, Tom has served as a member of the Cochise County Board of Adjustments, Planning and Zoning Commissioner (District 1), patrolling member of the Cochise County Sheriff’s Assist Team, and servant volunteer and coordinator for various callings at his local church. Tom is happily married to Sharon Borer and celebrated 34 blessed years of marriage in September 2019. They enjoy the great outdoors and especially enjoy when their travels take them to visit their 5 children and 10 grandchildren.

Aside from traveling and visiting his family, Tom’s favorite hobbies include woodworking, hiking, fishing, hunting, cooking, and just plain tinkering around the house.
