Scarcity continued

New and rethinking of old and outdated concepts of water management needs to be done.  Traditional water rights and laws are killing the economy in Cochise County and lead only to loss of real estate values, business opportunities, unemployment, homelessness and crime.  A strong economy overcomes these social hazards.  Close examination of the six ways to save the aquifer shows many creative and progressive measures to support and achieve a water use balance and, perhaps, a surplus of water in the San Pedro Valley.

First, flood waters are a hazard and should be reclaimed and not allowed to cause damage downstream.   Dams are not needed.  Reservoirs and pumping stations to provide underground water barriers between existing cones of depression caused by wells and the San Pedro River should be built to protect and enhance the aquifer.  In the 1880’s the Commander of the temporary Camp Huachuca granted permission to transport water from Carr and Miller Canyons to Tombstone.  This was an act of goodwill with no thought of future development.  Tombstone has its own watershed that has an abundant aquifer that has flooded all of the Tombstone underground mines.

Some of the six methods of protecting our environment are already in use by Sierra Vista and Cochise County.    Little PR on these programs has been published, but rather a constant bluster of fear-mongering that never addresses how a balance or even a surplus of water can be developed that would ensure for a prosperous community.  Scarcity is our community’s chance to excel and have both economic growth and a free-flowing San Pedro.

Mike Conway continued

From 1997 to 2007, he was a professor of geosciences at Arizona Western College, Yuma, Arizona; from 2002 to 2006 he was Director of the Honors Program.  Prior to that Michael was a research scientist at the Center for Nuclear Waste Regulatory Analyses in San Antonio, Texas.

His training is in physical volcanology with especial emphasis on small-volume basaltic volcanism (re: cinder cones). In pursuit of basaltic lavas, he has  traveled to the Kamchatka Peninsula (Tolbachik system); San Francisco & Mormon Mountain volcanic fields of northern Arizona; the Big Pine volcanic field of Owens Valley, California; the Michoacán volcanic field of Mexico; the  Volcanic Highlands of Guatemala; as well as Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Colombia.

Currently, his interests include Earth science outreach education and, oddly enough, GPS mapping and GIS analyses of Native American rock-art of southern Arizona.

It would also connect various agencies to one central system.  Cochise County will be the leader in this technology.  Kudos to those that made this possible!  We appreciate Chief Alinen's service to this community and to our country!

City of Sierra Vista Application Updates continued

Reminders from the City:

The City's goal is to review and approved applications as quickly as possible. Our office requires 2-5 business days for the initial review of small residential and commercial work.  For new construction and large scale remodels, we require at least 2 weeks for the initial review.  Please plan accordingly when starting new projects to avoid any delays.  Once the plans have been reviewed, our office will contact you.

All permits must be issued prior to the start of any job including demolition work.   Please be sure to use the correct application when applying for a permit.  New Sign Permit Applications are also in the process for those it applies to.  Also, the permit and plans belong to the home owner or business owner once the job is completed.  Please be sure all paperwork is surrendered at the time of completion.

Please provide a complete application each time to include a signature.  If a project requires a Plan Review fee ( i.e. new commercial construction, tenant improvement and large scale remodeling projects), payment is expected when the application is submitted.  We will hold the plans in our office until the fee is collected.

The Customer I.D. field is the number connecting your business license to our permit software to avoid duplicate accounts.  If you do not know your number, please email or call the office and we can provide that information to you.  Moving forward all applications should have this number on it.

Please contact our office with any questions.
